Phoenix Contact: PLCnext Firmware Security Issues Related to APPs and Configuration Files

Phoenix Contact — AXC F

Phoenix Contact PSIRThoog

Gepubliceerd

27 mei 2026

Laatste update

27 mei 2026

Getroffen sectoren

Risk evaluation

This advisory addresses security issues in PLCnext firmware versions prior to 2026.0.3 that are related to APP handling and the processing of configuration files. The identified vulnerabilities affect APP installation authenticity as well as the handling of configuration data in writable directories. Successful exploitation may allow authenticated attackers with different privilege levels to compromise integrity, availability, and system security of affected PLCnext Control. Both issues are resolved starting with PLCnext firmware version 2026.0.3.

Mitigatiesamenvatting

For firmware versions prior to 2026.0.3 apps are installed via WBM (APP Manager) without enforced authenticity validation. Verify the SHA-256 checksum provided by the PLCnext Store manually before installing an APP. Restrict WBM access to trusted IP ranges via the firewall and protect Engineer credentials. Monitor APP lifecycle security notifications locally or via a central Syslog server. If APPs are not required, disable the APP Manager service via the WBM System Services page to eliminate an unnecessary attack vector. Starting with firmware version 2026.0.3, APP signature verification is enabled by default and only signed apps can be installed.

CODESYS Development System - Incorrect Default Permissions

CODESYS — CODESYS Development System

CODESYS PSIRThoog

Gepubliceerd

26 mei 2026

Laatste update

26 mei 2026

Getroffen sectoren

Risk evaluation

Two local privilege escalation vulnerabilities were identified in the CODESYS Development System. Specifically, the PackageManager and the IPM create temporary directories with insecure default permissions when executed with administrative privileges. This allows low-privileged local users to modify a temporary bootstrap file to force the deployment of arbitrary components, or to exploit a Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) race condition to replace digitally verified installation files with malicious ones prior to installation. Both flaws bypass intended security boundaries during the installation of packages or add-ons.

Mitigatiesamenvatting

Update the following product to version 3.5.22.20. * CODESYS Development System The CODESYS Development System and the products available as CODESYS add-ons can be downloaded and installed directly with the CODESYS Installer or be downloaded from the CODESYS Store. Alternatively, as well as for all other products, you will find further information on obtaining the software update in the CODESYS Update area https://www.codesys.com/download/.

Risk evaluation

A vulnerability in the REST API of the JUMO device allows an attacker to trigger a denial‑of‑service (DoS) condition. Due to an incorrect implementation of the arrayLimit option in the Node.js qs module, limits for incoming request parameters are not properly enforced. As a result, an attacker can send specially crafted requests containing excessively large or deeply nested arrays, causing the web server to become unresponsive. This condition leads to a crash of the web server, followed by an automatic restart of the device.

Mitigatiesamenvatting

Update the affected products to version 431.10.0.0.26 for variTRON 300, to version 388.10.0.0.26 for variTRON 500 and to version 446.10.0.0.26 for variTRON 500 touch. The release of this versions are expected to Q2 2026.

ABB PSIRThoog

Risk evaluation

ABB is aware of public reports of vulnerabilities in 7-Zip version 18.5 and Microsoft Azure Data Studio version 1.32 included in the product versions listed as affected in the advisory. The vulnerability in 7-Zip can be exploited if attacker gains control over the system and extracts a malicious file using this version of 7-Zip. Otherwise, the attacker must force the user to visit malicious websites or click links and extract the package through 7-zip. Microsoft Azure Data Studio gets installed along with SQL Server Management Studio. An attacker who successfully exploits vulnerability in Microsoft Azure Data studio may compromise the security of the product by gaining privileges, reading sensitive information, executing commands, evading detection, etc. if the Authentication, Authorization and Accountability is not configured properly in the system. However, none of the products listed above uses Microsoft Azure Data Studio. Microsoft Azure Data Studio is automatically removed from the system from System 800xA 7.0 onwards. These vulnerabilities may appear when the product media is scanned. However, they can only be ex-ploited if the vulnerable software is installed on the system. For this reason, it is strongly advised to uninstall outdated or vulnerable versions of third-party software immediately.

Mitigatiesamenvatting

Workarounds are specific measures that a user can take to help block an attack, for example, temporarily disabling the vulnerable feature may remove the exposure with well-known impact on functionality. There are no workarounds. Uninstalling the affected third-party software fully eliminates the risk of vulnerabilities. Refer to the section ‘Recommended immediate actions’.

A vulnerability in the CODESYS Visualization login dialog has been identified. During logins within the CODESYS Visualization, authentication data may not be sufficiently isolated when multiple users perform login operations concurrently. As a result, an authenticated visualization user may be able to obtain credentials entered by another visualization user. The issue affects only login operations within an active visualization session and can be triggered via local and remote access to the visualization.

Mitigatiesamenvatting

Two alternative mitigation options have been identified. One option is to avoid using the Input Action "User Management -> Login" for changing users within an active visualization session. Instead, use the Input Action "User Management -> Logout" to do a complete logout followed by a new Login to the Visualization to re-login with another user. Alternatively, property handling within the visualization can be disabled via Project Settings -> Visualization -> General -> Advanced -> "Activate property handling in all element properties", if this is not required for the compilation of the application.
